Create a Next.js project with TypeScript and Tailwindcss (JIT) from scratch!

Hi everyone.

In this blog post, we are going to see how we can create the next js project with TypeScript and Tailwindcss. Also, we are going to enable JIT for Tailwindcss. For those how don't know what JIT is, JIT is a Just in time compiler for Tailwindcss. It compiles only the classes we declared in our project files(HTML or JSX). This allows fast load time. It will be a pretty short blog because there is not much to do to create a next.js project with typescript and Tailwindcss. It's pretty easy to let's go

Create a project directory

Create a directory with the name of your project. Then open that folder in a terminal or you can open it in visual studio code and use the integrated terminal there.

Initialize node

Let's initialize node in this directory. In terminal run this command to initialize node

yarn init -y

Add react and next package

Let's add next.js and react packages to this project. Run this command

yarn add -D next react react-dom

Add TypeScript and other type dependences

Let's add typescript in our project. Run This command

yarn add -D typescript @types/react @types/react-dom @types/node

Add Scripts

Open up package.josn file and add scripts for next.js.

// package.json
   "scripts": {
    "dev": "next dev",
    "build": "next build",
    "start": "next start",
    "lint": "next lint"

Create index.tsx File

In the root directory create a pages folder and inside that create an index.tsx file.

After that export a react component from index.tsx. This file will be the home page / of your website.

// pages/index.tsx

export default function () {
  return (
      <h1>Hello World</h1>

Start the development server

Now open up a terminal and run

yarn dev

This will start a development server on your local machine at port 3000. In the meantime, nextjs will automatically detect that you are using a typescript and it will generate a tsconfig.json file in yours. Now open up your browser and go to http://localhost:300. You should see Hello World printed there.

Awesome so far we completed creating a next.js project with typescript. Now time to add Tailwindcss.

Integrate Tailwindcss

Go to terminal and run this command

yarn add -D tailwindcss@latest postcss@latest autoprefixer@latest

After that run this

npx tailwindcss init -p

This will initialize Tailwindcss and create a tailwind.config.js file in our root directory.

Open tailwind.config.js file and do the following changes

// tailwind.config.js
module.exports = {
  mode: "jit",
  purge: ["./pages/**/*.{js,ts,jsx,tsx}", "./components/**/*.{js,ts,jsx,tsx}"],

Inside pages directory creates _app.tsx file.

Open this file. Add the following

// pages/_app.tsx

import React from "react";
import type { AppProps } from "next/app";
import "tailwindcss/tailwind.css";

const MyApp = ({ Component, pageProps }: AppProps) => {
  return <Component {...pageProps} />

export default MyApp;

Restart The Development Server

Awesome restart the development server and you will see some style changes. We successfully created a next.js project with TypeScript and Tailwindcss from scratch.
